Collection: Louisa Bermingham: A Personal Ecology

If paintings are worlds of their own, Louisa Bermingham invites viewers to enter them not only through her art but also through its display. A Personal Ecology exhibits the network of works, of objects, of sentiments that comprise Bermingham’s artistic practice, or rather, the environmental conditions in which her work develops.

Not to be confused with a biological ecology, this environment is personal, created through memory, experience, objects, relationships; an interconnected system shaped by observation, emotion, culture, and daily life. For Bermingham, objects, whether sought, uncovered, or stumbled upon, contribute to her own personal ecology, to the ecologies of each still life, each interior. As a result, these scenes are rarely static; they are brought to life by the objects, patterns, and forms that give them context and meaning.

Flora and fauna, in their presentation and representation have long been central subjects in Bermingham’s work, expressions of her appreciation, consideration and, more recently, concern, for the environment around her. Works in recent months have begun to incorporate both the personal and public archive – of particular memories, places or motifs. These scenes introduce into the work a meditation on belonging, or being in relation: of ecologies.

Ultimately, A Personal Ecology invites viewers into the worlds Bermingham constructs – where objects, images, and memories intertwine to form intimate, layered environments. Each painting and carefully placed object reflects connections between personal experience, cultural memory, and the natural world, encouraging us to notice the quiet relationships that shape how we understand and inhabit our surroundings.

Louisa Bermingham is a Bermudian artist, educator, and visual storyteller whose work bridges personal experience, memory, and the natural world. She has developed a distinguished career in both art-making and teaching, with more than two decades of experience educating students across the island—from primary school through to college-level instruction. Bermingham’s artistic practice is rooted in exploration and observation. She works across painting, ceramics, and mixed media, creating imagery that draws from everyday encounters, cultural touchstones, and her own emotional landscapes. Her art has evolved over time, moving from large charcoal drawings and mixed media pieces to the layered paintings and crafted forms that define her current work. Across her work, Bermingham examines how personal histories and everyday moments shape our sense of place and belonging. Through painting, installation, and handcrafted objects, she invites viewers to consider how memory, culture, and the natural environment intersect in ways both subtle and profound.
