"Sansevieria"

"Sansevieria” is carved from Colorado White Yule marble and is presented on a black granite base. 

The inspiration for “Sansevieria” was the more commonly recognised “Mother-in-law Tongue”. The twisting, overlapping leaves are a study in mutual support. I literally sketched it on the plane while flying to Colorado for my annual visit to MARBLE/marble’s summer carving symposium. The work was finished in Bermuda after being carefully shipped home. I took the precaution of leaving all the leaves ‘connected’ during shipment. A trick the old masters used so a sculpture wouldn’t be damaged until it was placed in the Patron’s garden…and they had been paid!
