"Sailing Free"
Colorado White Yule Marble
28 x 13 x 9 inches
"I am drawn to combining the sleek look and feel of the carved shapes in new relationships and in a variety of stones.
While I create these sculptures, I often have a story in my head as to what they represent or who they might be for. But there are times when the stone prevails and guides you to the correct ‘form’.
My hope is you will simply enjoy the shapes and textures letting your own emotions shape the tale it represents.
“Sailing Free” – this piece was originally started at the MARBLE/marble carving symposium located in Marble, Colorado. Located next to an old quarry that produced all the stone for the Lincoln Memorial and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington DC the quarry is still active and provides all the stone for the symposium. “Sailing Free” was completed in Bermuda in 2016 but was recently revised to make it lighter, both physically and visually. Sometimes I simply have to live with a piece of work to get the most out of the form that resides within. - Scott King
