May 2025: Painting with Fabric by Gail Marirea

Painting With Fabric by Gail Marirea | May 16 – June 10 in the Rick Faries Gallery

In May, quilt artist Gail Marirea returned to Masterworks for her third solo exhibition in the Rick Faries Gallery, titled Painting With Fabric. The exhibition presents a selection of Gail’s one-of-a-kind quilts and showcases her signature practice of replicating paintings, photographs, and postcards entirely in fabric. The artworks recreated in Gail’s quilts include pieces by Winslow Homer and the Tucker Sisters. Working from original patterns, Gail transforms brushstrokes into hand-sewn layers of fabric, ‘painting’ with one piece of material at a time.

Gail Marirea is a Bermudian/Canadian artist. She began quilting in 1997, which led to her first one-woman show in the Rick Faries Gallery at Masterworks in 2008 – the gallery’s inaugural exhibition. She has won an award in the Vermont Quilt Festival, has displayed at Government House in Bermuda, and her quilts are held in private collections internationally, including in England, France, Japan, and Australia. The Masterworks Permanent Collection features two of her artworks. She exhibited most recently in the 2024 Bermuda Biennial with the piece House near Elba Beach, Bermuda. This work also features in Painting With Fabric and is based on a painting of the same name by Catharine Tucker, showing Elba Beach before it was renamed Elbow Beach.

Painting With Fabric is on view from May 16th – June 10th in the Rick Faries Gallery.
